This experiment aimed to use stand-up comedy as a prompt-generator for design. Going to the comedy club with a notepad and a pen, automatically made the experience vastly different. Things like the laughter of the audience, the rhythm of the comedian, and the interruptions of the servers started to stand out. SOMATIC RESEARCH 15- Week Improv Comedy Class Humor is a strong bodily experience, in both the creation and the enjoyment of it. If I claimed to understand humor, I had to put myself in the scene. Hence, a 15-week long&nbsp; improv acting class was taken at The New School. And Shakespeare’s The Seven Ages of Man, through which we acted out people from different age groups, from a crying toddler to a grumpy grandpa. Through improv scenes performed in class, the persona slowly took shape by trial and error, seeing what works, and by reacting to the other actors’ personas. In the end, my persona was a poet who only writes her poetry on bread, but she always ends up eating it, which is her character flaw. D. THE TOASTER TYPEWRITER Research Through Design,&nbsp; Christopher Frayling In the 1960s Christopher Frayling proposed a new method of research, research through design. Design that intends to inform and to unlock the unknowns by making and doing. Design then truly becomes a tool, a process and a documentation for curiosity. It becomes a way of knowing. One of the iterations from the project&nbsp;Edible To-Do Lists got a very strong reaction. People found a lot of humor in it, and I wondered if I could stretch the joke. Watching the way that comedians are able to keep adding material to make their bits longer and funnier, this project is an attempt at making the bit longer. The toaster serves as a symbol for a machine that should never have really existed. It is so easy to replace a toaster with a lighter, a pan, or an open flame. The typewriter on the other hand is a magnificent device, but it is of no use today with all the technology that exists. It cannot look more like a toaster or more like a typewriter, it has to be a third machine of its own personality. The functions of the typewriter were given to the toaster- like being able to move the page up, down, left and right. Beginning by reverse engineering the typewriter and the toaster to remove excess material, followed by a deep cleaning of the old typewriter to get rid of dirt and rust to make it type again. A custom locking mechanism and castor wheels were welded and screwed in. We learned from the simple mechanisms used in a wire foam cutter. A conductive copper wire was shaped into the alphabet of choice (this&nbsp; typewriter has S, O, and U) which is connected on both ends to a transformer power adapter, and plugged into the wall. This new extraordinary of eating text opens up the world to a new form of communication and a new form of cooking. What’s so funny about bread? By performing the enlisted tasks, unclear if they are given by an external body or are self-assigned, the do-er is allowing the body to eat this text-etched food. I walked with a humble packet of multigrain bread and asked if I could put it under the laser cutting machine. They said “yes, but use the cardboard guidelines”, in the absence of a dedicated bread setting. The whole lab smelled like burned toast. Others need months of time, like idea number 6, which involves tattooing the tasks onto the tongue and employing pavlovian conditioning to establish a connection between taste and task. One standard LED is used to find narratives hidden behind abandoned trash objects, inviting exploration and reflection. The trash is transformed into a source of intrigue, as 42 items reveal their history and significance. An attempt was made to gather objects that were unique to each other and found in different spots to ensure I was meeting all new people. Each object was carefully rescued with the use of surgical gloves. There are three different levels which form three perfect straight lines. This tells us that when the number of strokes is between 0 and 25 the dust circle is linearly increasing, however as you approach 30 strokes, the circle shrinks considerably (number 4 can be considered an anomaly). The other piece of fantastic visualization of research is Plachý’s book on peeing. The research points out many problems around public hygiene, the key being the lack of public toilets in the Czech Republic. Two picnic ‘baskets’ are crafted to tell the story of the ant and the grasshopper. A study on women’s experiences on the autism spectrum and how it impacts their experiences of dating and forming connections, emotional and physical. The game acts as a translator of love languages, emotional and physical intimacy is merged to create shared gestures of love. The project is the result of a research assignment for a psychology class and a gestural project for a human factors class. Are these gestures safe and easy to understand? How can gestures be aided to distribute equal agency between giver and receiver? 3 POINTS OF RESEARCH 1. Gestural Studies&nbsp; A series of observations were conducted in order to understand the different responses of the body in a social space and a personal space. Participants were observed over a period of time and then asked a few questions pertaining to their outward physical expressions. Writing Academic Research Paper for Psychology Course Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) is a qualitative research method that focuses on understanding the lived experiences of individuals. Replicating a study previously conducted on the same-sex relationships of men with autism spectrum disorder, this study focuses on the romantic relationships of women, as there is very little research about women on the spectrum. Interviewing Woman on the Autism Spectrum To reach out to individuals, posts were made on various aspergers and autism community groups on Facebook. The first interview was conducted with a 39-year-old woman from Denmark over Zoom, who wishes to remain anonymous. Questions like: What are the most difficult challenges experienced in initiating and maintaining relationships? What are your feelings about being a woman on the spectrum having to go through the dating world? Other questions on gestural expressions of love were: What are small things you do to show affection, and how many do you have to remind yourself to do? Are there any gestures that you do to satisfy your partner’s needs? According to the Child and Adolescent Twin Study in Sweden, it is deduced that women with ASD are more likely to experience abuse early in life, which was unfortunately true for the interviewee. She shared how that experience made her distrust any form of physical expression of love. The interviewee is happily married and has discussed her refrains with her partner. “Sort of the big sweeping romantic gestures; I find that really exhausting. Holding hands, the little stuff, I’m great at, and I enjoy it. A card is picked out from the card pile, and the picker asks the other person the question on the card. After the question is answered they can choose to place one finger on any corresponding coloured circles.
